To give style to a pool, the choice of plants plays an important role. Tropical, Mediterranean or zen atmosphere, everything is possible to recreate the decor of your choice. Still, do you have to respect plants, their nature and their needs. Did you know for example that few flowers support chlorine? How to choose suitable plants?

Landscaping the garden around the pool, delicate work

After installing a pool, it is time to think about its decoration, especially the garden that surrounds it. To carry out this work, the help of a landscaper will be welcome, because he is able to know which plants best match your decorative style according to the constraints of your land. But you can also, on your side, imagine and install the desired atmosphere. Just a few good tips, a little patience (and passion) and you should get out of it at a lower cost.

And if you start by drawing a small sketch? Imagine on paper (or computer for the most daring of you!) the garden of your dreams. Are you more of a paradise setting and coconut beach? Rather Mediterranean atmosphere and Greek amphorae? You will understand, in terms of decoration around the pool, objects count as much as plants!

Planting the right flowers around the pool

Choosing the flowers to plant around the pool is a crucial step, because it requires plants that are resistant to chemicals. Chlorine and other products used for the maintenance of the pool may harm certain vegetation. It is particularly advisable to respect a certain safety distance, and thus to plant or place your plants in pot at least 1.50 m from the edge of the pool.

The water point attracts some insects, so you can also favor plants that play a repellent role like lemongrass or fragrant pelargoniums, both effective, fragrant and colorful!

Another criterion is the amount of sunshine. A swimming pool is usually placed in the sunniest area of the garden. It is rarely protected or shaded so the plants that will be installed around the basin must have good resistance to the sun and be not very sensitive to drought (especially if you are in the south of France). Among them is lavender, a fragrant and robust plant that particularly enjoys sunny locations. The carnations of India are also among those plants that can be put around the pool. They bring a colorful touch to the garden.

Some plants allow not only to decorate but also to protect the basin from prying eyes. This natural barrier is both practical and aesthetic. This is the case for example for bamboo, easy to maintain.

Some ideas of atmosphere

  • Oriental garden: bamboo, royal palm, Japanese maple, gardenia, fern, azalea, ground cover plants
