Plastic tarpaulins are generally made from polyvinyl, a thermoplastic obtained from residues from the refining of crude oil. There are several reasons why PVC tarpaulins are made this way. It seems more economical and malleable or even more profitable. Some explanations.
Oil, a more economical intermediate material?
Oil is a vital and renewable resource for petrochemicals. It makes it possible to obtain most of the components of plastic materials such as ethylene, propylene, etc. They are called naphtha. During the refining phase, naphtha comes off after the extraction of oil and diesel or kerosene.
These small molecules that contain 2 to 7 carbon atoms at most are monomers. They are processed to be delivered in the form of granules, powders or pastes in chemical plants.
Although price levels in the petrochemical sector are entirely dependent on global crude oil production, manufacturers of plastic sheeting have no difficulty sourcing since low volume (about 4% of world production) is enough to produce the approximately 300 million tons of plastics consumed by the planet annually.
Oil-based plastic waste, easier to recycle and recover?
Overcoming this polluting plastic waste has become a major challenge for any modern society. As a result, some specialists instead propose to recycle and then value them. Currently, only 20% of plastic waste is recycled into energy fuels.
Plastic obtained from oil is a high-carbon fuel. As soon as the manufactured product becomes plastic waste, it can become a secondary material for the industry. This is called the energy recovery of plastics. Be aware that some plastic sheets used in advertising or for any other use are therefore recyclable.
Petroleum-based plastic is indeed a real challenge, especially for the major leaders in the plastics industry and manufacturers of plastic products. Indeed, we know today that the price of a barrel of oil affects the production costs of intermediate materials as well as the finished product.
